The Real Madrid - Madrid, Spain

I haven't blogged for a long time as I have been so busy travelling and working hard to pay for my adventures so I have decided to write some retrospective posts as some people have been asking me for some tips to some of the places I have been lately. So LA, Vegas and Amsterdam are all 'coming soon'.

Madrid is a place I have visited once before for a long weekend at around the same time of year so I was really excited to head back. For this trip I STAYED again with a friend in Barrio Salamanca which was really close to the centre and easy to get around by public transport (bus and metro) and walking.

The weather was unexpectedly nice for November so my friend and I decided to VISIT many rooftops and terraces to soak up some much needed sunshine.

This is the view from Tartan Rooftop. (Calle del Marques de Casa Riera, 2, 28014) To access the roof, the Círculo de Bellas Artes has an elevator from the lobby that allows direct access to this privileged space. Tickets can be purchased at the front desk of the building for 3 euro. With one of the best viewpoints in Madrid this place gets pretty busy on the weekend - the waitress kindly informed me if you call ahead to reserve a spot you can skip the charge. So grab a Vino Blanco and RELAX!

Other brilliant roof terrace spots include: Hotel Room Mate Óscar (Plaza de Vázquez de Mella, 12, 28004) part of the Room Mate hotel chain Next to the Gran Vía and Puerta del Sol, in the Chueca district has a fantastic rooftop bar with a swimming pool that is open in the summer. This provocative hotel ask's 'Do you want to sleep with me?' and is a great place to LOOK over into the square below and soak up some sun.

Terraza Gymage (Calle Corredera Baja de San Pablo, 2, 28004) is located in the attic of an old cinema and whilst it doesn't look much from the outside its modern roof terrace seems perfectly placed amongst the old buildings in the Malasaña area of Madrid.

Hotel De Las Letras 7th floor (Calle Gran Vía, 11, 28013) was closed when I visited however I managed to sneak up to get an idea of what it would be like. Although it is much smaller that the other terraces it has a very homely feel and the fact that it is located on the Grand Via just round the corner from Tartan makes for a perfect .

I VISITED an old Cinema (Renoir Princesa), whilst I was in town which I believe is one of the few showing English films that aren't dubbed. It had a great selection of films along with great service.

I ATE Brunch at La Tita Rivera (Calle de Pérez Galdós, 428004)- located in Chueca it doesn't look like much from the outside but step through the door and you will be pleasantly surprised. Its garden area is the perfect place to sample some of their fresh food and pastries and be sure to try their in house cider.

You can't go to Spain without sampling the tapas and Grupo Cazorla has some of the best. With 5 restaurants around Madrid you simply have to TRY. Do things the Spanish way and eat on a barrel whilst enjoying the wine. I went to the restaurant in Montesa where the staff are so friendly.

Be sure to ROW a boat across the lake in Rialto Park followed by an ice cream then hot foot it one of the many Museums surrounding it.

The indoor markets are the best way to sample the many delicacies of Spain. Mercado San Miguel (
Plaza de San Miguel, s/n, 28005) is the more touristy of the markets but it is still great none the less - head here to sample wine, food, tapas and bars next to Plaza Mayor. In Madrid’s Chueca neighborhood is my favourite Market 'Mercado San Anton' (Calle de Augusto Figueroa, 24, 2800). The Mercado is a modern five-story food heaven selling lots of local produce where you can stop in for tapas or head up to their terrace at La Cocina San Anton. You can even purchase food and ask the restaurant to cook it for you.

Other great restaurants that I was recommended but didn't get chance to sample were Botin (The oldest restaurant in the world) as well as La Venencia (an old sherry bar).

We HEADED to Almonte Sala Rociera for a real local taste of live music and Flamenco.

The metro is really easy to get around the city however nothing beats jumping on a moped and seeing everything whizz by. I got the chance to go and SEE the famous Bernabeu football stadium on the back of one.

The Rising Cock - Lagos, Portugal

At the beginning of June I decided to head for a short five day break with some friends to a place that I have come very familiar with since I was little. I used to go to Lagos as a young child on many a family holiday and have since returned both by myself and with friends. This time it was with three of my friends and I can't wait to go back.

For this trip we stayed about 6km from Lagos in a village called Praia da Luz in a beautiful vila called 'Vila Sol'. Renting a vila is a really cheap and convenient option in this area allowing lots of privacy and we even had our own swimming pool.

Praia da Luz is a sleepy place this time of year and mainly geared towards families and couples. Never the less it is a fantastic spot to relax and soak up some sun and appreciate the stunning beach with some peace and quiet because as soon as the season picks up the beach will be far more crowded.  The white sandy beach is overlooked by the rocky 'Montinhos da Luz' something which is popular at the beaches in this area and for those feeling more adventurous you can actually climb the 99metres to the top. My group was not feeling so energetic.

Renting a car is a must for this area, it is really easy and there is so much choice online. Just beware of the new toll charges that have come in to effect and are causing both tourists and operators much confusion!

There was an abundance of activities to keep us entertained both in Praia Da Luz and Lagos. Below are some of the things that we got up to:

SHOPPED for jewellery at the market stalls in the main square Praça de Gil Eanes, Lagos -   with most statement necklaces only 3Euro it would be rude not to!

DRANK freshly squeezed orange juice at beach cafe Habana. (Comercial Via Sul, Loja 4., Luz)

WALKED along the Marina and stopped at one of the many restaurants to people watch.

Spent the day RIDING many slides at water park SLIDE & SPLASH

LOOKED on in awe at lots of architecture around Lagos and Praia da Luz.

My Favourite Square in Lagos

TRIED some authentic Piri Piri Chicken from a local Churrascaria

ATE fresh 'fish of the day' for dinner at local hotspot Mullens which is full of fun and has an incredible atmosphere. (Rua Candido dos Reis 86Lagos 8600)

WALKED by the walls of the city in Lagos discovering the old town.

DRANK the famous Vinho Verde - a Portugese wine known as 'green wine' made in the north of the country! Favourite brands included Gazela, Gatao and Casal Garcia.

ATE the most incredible Pastel de Nata (Portuguese Tart) multiple times from local bakeries and cafes - I even had a go at making these myself when I got home! Recipe here.

READ a great book by Dawn O'Porter - the perfect beach read!

Welcome to Miami and Bienvenido a Miami

Following my adventures in the Bahamas I went on to Miami. Below are some of the things I got up to over the 7 days I was there.

I STAYED at THE CHELSEA HOTEL (944 Washington Ave Miami Beach, FL 33139) which is a great Art Deco hotel and part of The Southbeach Hotel Group. I was originally meant to stay at The Whitelaw Hotel but my reservation was changed at the last minute. The Chelsea is a boutique hotel with only a few floors and small sized oriental style rooms but the best thing about staying there is the great bar and friendly staff. The terrace at the front of the hotel is a great and the free happy hour 7-8pm also adds to its charm.

DRANK Kentucky Ice Tea Cocktails at the DELANO poolside bar (1685 Collins Ave)

ATE Sushi at TONI's - The 2nd oldest Restaurant in Southbeach (1208 Washington Ave) My favourite was the bagel roll!

WANDERED  around South Beach looking at its art deco buildings

STOOD on the steps of the  VERSACE MANSION

LISTENED to Live Music upstairs in the VAN DYKE CAFÉ (846 Lincoln Rd) - starts at 9pm

DANCED in to the early hours with the locals at SEGAFREDO L'Originale (1040 Lincoln Rd)

ATE at NEXXT CAFE (700 Lincoln Road) With its huge menu along with its portions I could have spent all night at this great people watching spot. The Breakfast Burrito is not for small eaters!!

WATCHED the Red Hot Miami Heat play at AMERICAN AIRLINES ARENA with some cheese and chilli fries in hand (601 Biscayne Blvd) followed by large Mojitos at Bayside.

RELAXED on a bed at NIKKI BEACH (1 Ocean Dr) at its legendary Sunday session before dancing the night away to chilled Techno Pop or the upstairs Hip Hop vibe. $20 cover.

ATE an all-American breakfast at the 11th STREET DINER (1065 Washington Av) housed in a Paramount railroad dining car.
FLO RIDA                                                     LEBRON JAMES AND DWAYNE WADE

BLAGGED VIP wristbands and skipped the line at hot club MANSION (1235 Washington Ave) to watch Taboo from the Black Eyed Peas perform and jump around on the decks.

SHOPPED at LINCOLN ROAD picking up some great summer items including some pieces from H&M's new conscious collection (Blog post to follow)

VISITED the Gator Park at the EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK and took an airboat ride - $35 including transport and takes half a day

BROWSED POP ART by Romero Britto at the BRITTO CENTRAL FINE ART GALLERY (818 Lincoln Rd)

LAPPED UP the chilled vibe of the outside bar of THE INDIAN CREEK HOTEL with one of their wonderful cocktails. (2727 Indian Creek Dr)

PARTIED at BÅOLI on a Wednesday - put on your best British accent to make friends with the doorman and get past that red rope (1906 Collins Ave)
